There’s a popular saying that goes around reading “God will never give you more than you can handle.” I clung to this mantra when I was younger as life took its turns. Slowly I began to realize that I couldn’t manage things on my own. The weight of the world was too much for my shoulders to bear. I couldn’t help but wonder why God would let so many bad things happen.
News flash, God DOES give you more than you can handle. All the time. Sometimes even every single day. Because if we could handle this world on our own, then we wouldn’t need God in the first place. In life’s trials and tribulations, we realize how fragile we are without God, but in him we find our strength.
A big issue for today’s Christians, in my opinion, is that we are too quick to cling onto ideas that make us feel good. On a normal day, it is comforting to think that God would never give us more than we can handle. But when life is falling apart at the seams, that mantra feels like a slap in the face.
Then we start believing that God abandoned us which could not be farther from the truth. Just because we cannot do it on our own, doesn’t mean that we are doomed. Even though God doesn’t promise not to give us more than we can handle, he does say this:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” John 1: 2-3
“When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord; he brought me into a spacious place. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” Psalm 118: 5-6
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” Psalm 55:22
