When you graduate from high school and go to college, the world expects you to have a plan. This plan is supposed to guide your entire future. Your career depends on your decision on what to major in, and the major you choose determines which plan or route you take. If you are anything like me, then you had absolutely no idea what to choose as a major.
Therefore, I (like some of you) felt like I was stuck without a plan. I felt so much pressure to decide my entire future that I neglected to focus on the now. You might feel overwhelmed with options or don’t even know where to begin. Regardless, you must declare a major. But do not stress because you can always change it later. Most college students change their majors at least once anyway.
Instead you should focus on what you can do right now. Try taking a class or two for the simple reason that they interest you. That’s exactly how I found my perfect major. If you encounter professionals with jobs that you might be interested in, ask them questions. Try to get a feel of what it is like to work a day in their shoes.
A professor once told me “If you could do one thing for the rest of your life for free, that’s what you should major in.” That really stuck with me because all too often we focus on the salary of potential careers. However, we should shift our focus to finding a career that we are so very passionate about that we wouldn’t mind doing the work for free.
You probably won’t figure this out overnight, but that’s okay. I know it might seem like a waste of time being in college without a plan, but there are so many ways that you can benefit from these years of waiting. Maybe you haven’t figured out what you want to do just yet, but at least you can now cross off things that you for sure do not want to do.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28
